The name Kannur district is named after a famous town Kannur. The old name Cannanore is the anglicised form of the Malayalam name Kannur. According to one opinion, ‘Kannur’ is a derivation from Kanathur, an ancient village, the name of which survives even today in one of the wards of Kannur Municipality. The Chief Minster VS Achutanandan told the press that government will initiate the work of the Kannur International Airport. He said this after the first meeting with the Board of Directors Of the Kannur International Airport. The land acquisition work has already begun.More than 900 acres of land have been already acquired. The Cm told that the rest of land will be acquired ASAP. To prepare plan,estimate and design of the airport a consultant will be appointed.
