Overbury’s Folly, i guess this name is in fact a part of the life of almost all the people in Thalassery. This scenic, calm, quiet Sea shore picnic spot along the western coastline with historic Thalassery Fort and Sea View Park on both sides is a hot spot especially among the younger generation around this area. This coastline extending up-to “Muzhappilangad – The only Drive In Beach in Kerala” is perhaps the most beautiful coastal areas in our state…
I came across this place on my attempts to make this then unknown town of Thalassery familiar to me. That was the first time i got out of my native place Thiruvananthapuram for higher studies. And i wanted to explore this place. I had noticed sea when i passed through Kannur Thalassery Road and i wanted to explore. And one evening i wandered along the municipal stadium and noticed the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Center… Had noticed the familiar drawings of nature using clouds above sea then itself. Went further and found this place almost hidden.
Immediately fell in love with the sunset over here… It was just awesome… This place was just a hilltop with one concrete seating and stone barrier separating the sea and land. Sitting on the stone barrier, hearing to the waves crushing on the rocks just below and the feel as if the sea is talking to you through the breeze is just unforgettable. The yellow sky during sunset, the view of light house and the Dharmadam Island also are wonderful.. This is a perfect place for keeping aside all the tensions in the busy life and look back at your own self.
Lets get back to the history of this place for now. In 1870′s, a British National E.N Overbury who served as a local judge then fell in love with this place just like I did and wanted to convert this place to a picnic spot. But sadly he couldn’t finish his dream. And this place which was unfinished then came to be known as Overbury’s Folly.
At present the tourism department has included this place on heritage tourism project and renovated this place and made this beautiful than ever. This place was open again for the good people of Thalassery on 14th November 2009. A nominal fee of 5 Rs is being collected from the visitors for maintenance and is really going on good. A open air Cafeteria, good seating etc are provided for the convenience of the visitors. Still the nostalgic feeling when you sit on the rocks which i told you is missing when sitting on the seating provided. But outside the park, people who love that have found their own recreation spot.
I can tell you one thing. You’ll feel the warmth and fall in love with this beautiful place once you visit it. I just love this place…
